  • On the first day of class, I prepared a seating chart, routines and introduction activities. I chose three words to describe the class culture I want to create this year.

  • Before class, I created a seating chart based on their previous grades and status. I have written the warm-up on the teaching board. The first warm-up is to introduce yourself to everyone. On the blackboard, I will also write a few questions, hoping that they can answer them in class in the future. After that, they would warm up in their notebooks every day and hand them to me after class. After each question, I will give the correct answer and share the answer with the students.

  • First, I will ask them, which part of Chinese culture do you most want to know? We will show the festivals and customs of traditional Chinese culture on the PPT. At the same time, I will modify each unit according to their preferences to make it more relevant to the students.

  • I will ask them to use post-it notes to write three words to describe what class rules they think are their ideal class. All students need to introduce their class rules to the students in the group.

  • Then they need to discuss why they are interested in Chinese history and what their favorite Chinese history and culture are. Through this activity, they built a relationship and made our curriculum relevant to their needs. We will put the most common ones as our class agreement and stick them on the walls of the classroom.
  • Before get out of class every day, give them a few minutes to write down what they learned today. it can let students read them quickly takeaways or processes from the lesson, and summarized into their own words.
