  • "As though to compensate, Mary Warren goes to Elizabeth with a small rag doll." (53, Miller)
  • "Hale- Mary Warren, a needle had been found inside this poppet." (71, Miller)
  • "Cheever: Why- he draws out a long needle from the poppet- its a needle! Herrick, Herrick it is a needle!" (70, Miller)
  • Explanation-In this scene in "The Crucible" John Hale, Cheever, Herrick, John Proctor, Elizabeth, and Mary Warren are all gathered in the living room of the Proctor's house. Earlier that day Marry Warren had hand crafted a rag doll for Elizabeth during the Witch Trails. Abigail was next to her during the trials as she was making the doll. When Cheever was investigating the doll, he found a long needle inside the doll. Abigail was found struck with a needle inside her belly earlier that night. It was said that this signifies that Mary had charged murder on Abigail. Mary then said that she was perfectly fine and had not been possessed by the devil. Mary then tried to say that she had stuck or left the needle inside the poppets belly.
