  • Railroads
  • Immigrants
  • Indian wars
  • The railroads of Washington were used to move immigrants into the state and the railroads were also used to transport materials like umber and things out of mines. The railroads were important because they helped connect our state to the rest of the country and also expanded our population.
  • Industry and natural resources/ gold rush
  • An immigrant is a person who comes to live permanently into a foreign country. A lot of immigrants came to Washington because of how many natural resources there were. A lot of farms started up there and made big businesses. Immigrants helped Washington grow a lot because a lot of them moved to the same cities and that caused the cities and farms to grow bigger.
  • Road to statehood/ provisional government and pioneer life
  • In the 1850s native American tribes in the Puget sound area had a conflict with the united states military. This event was important for our states history because it brought up the problem of us breaking treaties and how we need to give the natives their rights still. Even if we didn't respect them for more than 150 years more it was a step in the correct direction because the natives were willing to fight for their freedom.
  • Washington and the civil war
  • Our state is filed with a lot of natural resources. Like ores lumber, and lots and lots of farmland. Immigrants and settlers from the east too advantage of this and started to start companies to haul lumber and mine the ores. Many individuals started dairy farms, wheat farms, and corn farms. Produce was and still is an important part of our state. The gold rush that happened in Alaska and California brought a lot of people to Seattle. It was a hotspot for when people stopped before their long journey to Alaska or California. Both the rich and poor came and this made the city of Seattle bigger and more populated.
  • The pioneers moved west to states like Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington. They moved to these states because they held promise of livestock, hunting, farming and, fishing. They set up a provisional government up so they could claim the land for the United States government. This is where conflicts started for America and why it is how it is today. Washington, along with other states in the west, this was after 13 years of no new states being admitted into the United States. When all of these states were admitted into the states it made the united states a bigger country and eventually made it easier for them to make treaties in the west and to conquer of of what we know as America today.
  • Washington was not yet a state by the time the civil war came around. Because of this there was no set regiment of soldiers from Washington. The soldiers that came to help heled the Union and played a very minor role in the war. By doing this though our state sided with the union in the war so we were on the right side. It was important that we fought with the north because we were on the good side of the union.
