- During the reign of Henry II a small community of Jews settled in York. Two of the Jews were important townsmen- Benedict and Josce. They had become rich by lending money to northern landowners.
- In 1189 King Richard 1 was to be crowned.
- Both these important men decided to travel to london for the great occasion.
- Many people in London did not like the Jews. They thought that the Jews brought strange and wicked customs to the city. They were jealous of their success.
- Benedict and Josce found themselves in London at just the wrong time. While there were there a terrible riot took place. Benedict was killed.
- Josce and some the others escaped quickly, but the journey to home was dangerous.
