- why trouble going to Europe when you could study here instead.
- A certain man named Kapitan Tiago hosted a dinner party to welcome back Juan Crisostomo Ibarra Y Magsalin on his return to the Philippines.
- One day don rafael came up on the government tax collector beating the boy in the street.
- When Don Rafael interfered, he accidentally pushed the man too hard causing the tax collector to hit his head on the rock.
- That injury led to a man's death. Your father was thrown in jail and accused of subversion and heresy.
- Father Dámaso heaped new accusations on him and everyone abandoned him. By the time he was finally proven innocent, Don Rafael had already died in prison.
- While talking with people at the mentioned party, he found out that his father died without knowing the reason why.

- During dinner, Father Dámaso stood up and insulted Ibarra about his education in Europe. In response, Ibarra swallowed his pride and chose to refrain from directly insulting the half drunk friar.
- On his way home, Ibarra walked with Señor Guevara, a lieutenant of the civil guard. The lieutenant explained that a few months after Ibarra left, father Dámaso accused Don Rafael of not going to confession. He told Ibarra about what happened to his father; Don Rafael.
