The Battle of Stalingrad

- In August 1942 the Nazi's declared war on the Russian town of Stalingrad. this action broke the Nonaggression pact, between Hilter and Stalin.
- halfway through the battle the Nazi's were winning
- by fall of 1942 the Germans basically had all of Stalingrad. The constant air raids left the town in ruins.
- Joseph Stalin ordered his forces to not retreat, and to keep the city at all cost.
- when the harsh Russian winter set in the Germans were at a disadvantage fighting in a climate they weren't accustomed too, the Russian forces took advantage of this and started taking back Stalingrad.
- in February 1943 the Russian forces won the battle for Stalingrad, this was the turning point for the war, it showed weakness in the Nazi forces, and gave confidence to the Russian forces.
