  • U.S. drops atom bomb on Japan. This was important because it started the arms race with Soviet Union. The arms race was one of the biggest parts of the Cold War. The arms race was also why the Vietnam and Korean Wars were so big.
  • The Korean War between North and South Korea. This war was very important because it was the first proxy war between Soviet Union and the U.S. North Korea was backed by the Soviet Union and South Korea was backed by the U.S. The U.S. was very worried that Korea would fall into communism.
  • The Vietnam War was important because it was the bigger, longer, more deadlier proxy war. The U.S. backed South Vietnam, while the Soviet Union backed North Vietnam. The U.S. had already let North Korea continue to run as a communist country so it was vital to them to not let any of Vietnam fall to communism. They failed however and both North and South Vietnam became run by communists.
  • Poland and Hungary becoming independent from the Soviet Union was important because it made the Soviets weaker. It also freed a lot of people from the oppressive government, and got rid of communism in a large part of the world. The Soviet union losing those two countries was the beginning of their collapse and the beginning of the end of the Cold War.
  • The Berlin Wall collapsing was important because it ended the separation of Germany. The Eastern side of Germany was being run by communists from the Soviet Union. The wall falling ended the Soviets reign in Germany and was a big step in their fall. It also got rid of communism in a big part of the world, and that was important for the U.S.
  • The Soviet Union collapsing was important for the Cold War because it was the end of it. Since the Cold War was between the U.S. and the Soviet Union collapsing ended it. It also freed a lot of people from communism and put them in a better, more sustainable government.
