- (Pg.56) "The next thing I knew I was lying on the pavement beside the fountain, coughing water and gasping. I lay there weakly, breathing in air and spitting out water..." "Then I saw Johnny. He was sitting next to me, one elbow on his knee, and staring straight ahead." These quotes support the theme of violence throughout the book because ponyboy is nearly drowning and johnny just killed Bob.
- (Pg.91) "I jerked loose and ran on. All I could think was: We started it. We started it. We started it!" This quote supports the theme of violence in the outsiders, because there is a huge life threatening force taking place in front of Pony and Johnny's eyes, and a thought that they started the fire.
- (Pg.149) "You read about people looking peacefully asleep when they're dead, but they don't. Johnny just looked dead. Like a candle with the flame gone. I tried to say something, but I couldn't make a sound." This quote supports the theme of violence throughout the outsiders, by showing the harsh physical and mental unwellness of Johnny's death.
