- Change was a big part of America in the Turn of the Century. Communication improved when the telephone was invented.
- Hello! I just got this new telephone! Isn't it great!
- Transportation changed too. The improvement of the railroad system changed how business was done and it also allowed people in far Texas to move cattle to people in the east to make a profit.
- The improvement of the railroad is great! It makes transporting and traveling so much easier!
- In the 1800's, cowboys could make $40 per cow in Kansas and only $4 in Texas. That's why cowboys started selling in the east to sell in any city in the country. The two most famous trails are the Chisholm Trail and the Great Western Trail. There traveling was based on price incentives.
- Finally! I can get my cows to the east and sell them for more than in Texas!
- Pennsylvania started specializing in steel production because the mountains in Pittsburgh were full of iron used to make steel. People knew this was the place to get steel and Pittsburgh steel companies got more money and the standard living increased.
- Yes! This is great! All these people are coming to Pittsburgh and we get a lot more money!
- Immigrants were a change too. During the Turn of the Century, millions of people from Europe and Asia rushed into Angel Island in California and Ellis Island in New York. They came for religious freedom, money, and land. Unfortunately, many families couldn't afford to go together.
- Finally the promise land!! We get freedom, money, and land! This is the best place ever!!
- During the Turn of the Century productivity was happening. Cities that that specialized in one type of item were very productive because they were good at what they did. The economy in cities began to do very well because of all the changes. When the economy was , people could make more money.
