  • Summary 1
  • If we look like musicians to you, you can expect to hear nothing but noise. [touching the blade of his sword] (III.i.21-23)
  • Summary 2
  • This calm submission is dishonorable and vile. (III.i.44)
  • And so, good Capulet—which is a name I love like my own name—you should be satisfied with what I say. (III.i.41-43)

  • Tybalt enters the scene with a group of Capulets. Tybalt asks to have a word with one of them. Mercutio mocks him and teases him, asking for a fight. He begins to argue with Tybalt.
  • Dramatic Irony

  • Tybalt tries to bring Romeo into the battle. Romeo refuses. Mercutio is disgusted because he thinks Romeo isn't willing to fight for himself.
  • Theme: Love can cause violence
  • Mercutio steps in to battle. Romeo tries to stop it by getting in between Tybalt and Mercutio. Tybalt stabs Mecutio.
  • In the battle Tybalt tries to bring Romeo into battle. Romeo refuses because he is aware of Tybalt being Juliet's cousin. Although the audience knows the fact, Mercutio and Benvolio are not. This emits a dramatic irony to the audience as they watch Mercutio get confused about Romeo's refusal.
  • Throughout the story there are several instances where Romeo and Juliet seem to get into more violence when they are in love. The love brings Romeo and Juliet more hardship starting with Tybalt seeing Romeo at the party and being determined to kill him. Later in the play, the theme will start to become more and more intense.
