  • Radical Reconstruction
  • The Radical Republicans helped pass the civil rights bill. they wanted the south to suffer for all the damage they made during the civil war.
  • Andrew Johnson became President in 1864 after Abraham Lincoln was assassinated. Johnson's views mattered a great deal. however many Radical Republicans thought that Johnson's view on Reconstruction proved to be very lenient. President Andrew Johnson stood by as the Black Codes were passed.
  • White League & KKK

  • Freedmen's Bureau
  • The radical republicans believed that the blacks were entitled to the same civil rights and opportunities as the whites. They knew that Johnson's view on reconstruction was to lenient and they thought that he was being racism.
  • Compromise of 1877
  • Some formed white supremacy groups with the goal of stopping African-Americans from voting by using violence. One white supremacist group called the White League even tried to take over the state government in Louisiana by force.
  • There goal was to contain many Freedmen.
  • In 1865 Congress created the Freedmen’s Bureau to help newly freed slaves and poor whites in the South. The Freedmen’s Bureau would give newly freedmen food and provide teachers for African-American children.
