Causes for Rebellion
The sepoy Indians decided to rebel, and not cooperate with the British. The British then tried to directly rule India. The Indians, couldn't shoot weapons, so they were easy to take over.
Revolt / Rebellion of 1957
Due to the influence of the British, they became 2nd class citizens in their own country. They work hard to earn, everything they produce is exported, but all their resources are taken away by the Britishers.
INDIA
Many Indians began to feel that the British were destroying their religion, their social customs and their traditional way of life. There were of course other Indians who wanted to change existing social practices.

Political
Matters came to a head during the introduction of the Pattern 1853 Enfield Rifle. Rumor's spread that the cartridges for the new rifle were greased with pig and cow fat. This made them offensive to both Muslims and Hindus.
Unfortunately, the Indian Revolt of 1857 did not result in freedom for India. In fact, Britain reacted to the rebellion by taking even firmer control of the "crown jewel" of its empire. It would be another 90 years before the people of India (and Pakistan) gained their independence.
