  • In 1828, Congress passed a law raising tariffs, also known as taxes, on imported goods.
  • LAWIdea: Encourage the growth of manufacturing.
  • We favor the tariff because they allow people to buy more American manufactured goods.
  • We hate tariffs. They discourage trade among other nations and they hurt planters in the South.

  • I understand the southerners concerns and therefore I will sign a new law that will lower the tariffs.
  • John C. Calhoun supporter of states' rights proclaimed the right to reject a law called nullification.
  • We have the right to nullify or reject such tariff laws. We will secede if the national government tries to enforce tariff laws.

  • I will hang the first man of them I get my hands on if one drop of blood be shed there in defiance of the laws. Congress will pass the Force Bill which will allow me to use the Federal Army to collect tariffs if it's needed.
