  • Marks mum has asked him to hang up her new painting on the wall while she's out. She wants the painting exactly 2.5m high on the wall, but Mark can't find a measuring tape so he decides to use trigonometry.
  • oh no! i'm too short
  • it's ok Mark i'll do it.
  • Mark first wants to find out how tall the wall is. Already knowing that he is standing 4m away and looking at the wall at a angle of 37° he does tan(37)*4 to get the height of 3m.
  • 33.4˚

  • 2.5m
  • Now that he's figured out how high the wall is Mark can now try to find the angle he needs to be to get 2.5m high on the wall. He is 1.75m tall so 2.5m would be 75cm higher than him. Still standing 4m away he figures the angle out from tan-1 (0.75/4)=10.62.
  • thank you so much! I love it!
  • Mark feels proud now that he's figured out how high to hang up the painting. But as he tries to hang it up he realises he's too short and that he can't reach so he asks his older brother Johnny to help. Johnny agrees and as he's hanging up the painting, Mark decides to find out how far he is from the wall.
  • Johnny is 1.84m tall and is facing the wall at 33.4˚. Mark then figures out the answer by finding 0.63/tan(33.4). He now knows that Johnny is 1m away from the wall.
  • When Marks mum comes home and sees the painting hanged up at exactly 2.5m high on the wall she's very happy and thanks her son.
