  • On December 7th, 1941 surprise attack was conducted by the Japanese on Pearl Harbor. These attacks were one of many events that would lead America to eventually declare war on the Axis Powers and join the fight. After these attacks, Japanese Americans would begin to see a very strong change in treatment from Americans
  • Hatred began to grow in America for the Japanese people. Newspapers, signs, and even stores would have headlines or anti-Japanese signs saying they were not allowed into a business. All Japanese people were looked at as the enemy.
  • In the midst of the chaos, President Roosevelt signed the Executive order 9066. This would begin the creation of imprisonment camps for Japanese people. They were relocatedfrom march to may of 1942.
  • In the intermittent camps, if children were old enough they were provided education within the camps. This was viewed as a sort of achievement. The student to teacher ratio in these camps were 48:1 where as the national average was much lower at 28:1
  • Within these camps they were responsible to grow and make a lot of their own food. At the end of 1943 the camps were making around 85% of their vegetables. Many of these camps would even have animals such as hogs.
  • Within the camps there were some jobs available for the Japanese people. A lot of woman could work to help support their family. They would work full 40 hour weeks as things like cashiers.
