Storyboard Text

  • Reading about holding Gina's head in the mother's palm made me tear up. How could you look at a seed that hasn't had the chance to grow and give up?
  • mentally retarded
  • maternal sacrifice
  • burden to society and parents
  • limited brain function
  • Instead of a human, schools and doctors saw her disability first. They saw her as something to be fixed, focused on defining her by what she can't do.
  • It's not empty.. we didn't even let her grow yet.
  • When we only see the deficits, we miss the opportunity to find new growth.
  • That tree looks empty, something's missing
  • It is okay to be uncertain. Ms. Mirabella writes in Gina as a young adult that these thoughts of "what if" continued to stay with her. I don't think these what if's are indications of discontentment. It showed me how open ended Gina's future remained even through all the seeds of doubts professionals planted in Ms. Mirabella and Gina's mind. This is something I want to remember as an educator.. Uncertainty is something necessary for growth. It can be closer to hope than failure if you can see it that way..
  • Some other ways to uplift students like Gina as an educator-don't be fooled by you're own ignorance, you never know how much a student is capable of achieving-try to keep a clean slate of expectations because they can become reality -everyone has purpose and meaning as Ms. Mirabella puts best.
