  • Gina's Story Gina's struggles, victories and persistent quest to champion her child were incredibly moving. It highlighted that the parent's views should be appreciated, and their aptitude should be valued in the educational process. Gina's Story made me understand how teachers are crucial in building inclusive and teaming communities where the parents feel empowered to suggest their ideas.
  • Here are four ways I plan to facilitate this:
  • Create Welcoming SpacesTo ensure parents feel comfortable sharing their perspectives, I will strive to create welcoming and inclusive spaces within the school community. This may include organizing parent workshops, cultural appreciation events, or informal gatherings where parents mingle with each other and with school faculty. By creating an environment where people feel included, I will help build trust and enhance our efforts to help the students succeed.
  • Open Channels of CommunicationCommunication is the critical enabler of any successful relationship. I will set up different modes through which parents can access me that are not restricted to only email, scheduled meetings, or virtual office hours. Furthermore, I will use forums, such as parent-teacher meetings and class newsletters, to keep parents up-to-date on their child's progress and encourage feedback.

  • MEETING ONLINE

  • METTING IN-PERSON

  • Encourage Parent InvolvementConsidering parents' contribution to their kid’s education, I will work to get them actively involved in school programs and decision-making processes. Parents will have real chances to directly impact their children's educational lives by volunteering in classrooms and joining parent-teacher associations or advisory committees (Clever Prototypes, 2019). Through developing a feeling of ownership and agency among parents, I encourage them to act on behalf of their children and be a part of the school community at large.
  • Actively Listen and ValidateListening is the act of hearing and the insight to understand and empathize with the one who speaks. As I interact with parents, I will use active listening techniques to demonstrate that I care about their ideas and problems. Understanding this is essential because parents play a significant role as primary caregivers, bringing exceptional insights (Clever Prototypes, 2019). In this way, I want to create a perception of reciprocal respect and partnership among everyone in addressing students' needs.
