Mathilde imagines a life of luxury. She feels as if she deserves every delicacy there is to offer. She imagines a nice house with multiple rooms, servants, and lavish furniture. She spends her time thinking about the things she wants because she is unhappy with how "little" she has.
Climax
Mathilde's husband brought home an invitation to a ball. Instead of being happy about this, Mathilde was annoyed. She asked her husband how she would be able to go to the ball with proper clothing. Hesitantly, her husband gave her the money he was saving for a rifle to but her a dress.
Falling Action
Mathlide is distressed that she doesn't have any jewelry to do with her gown. After a suggestion from her husband, she goes to her wealthy friend, Jeanne, and asks to borrow some jewelry. After going through a few necklaces, she finally finds one she likes.
Resolution
Mathlide and her husband arrive at the ball and they have a great time. Everyone wants to talk with her.
