Your bedtime story tonight is going to be all about what the Europeans did in Africa. What I will be reading to you will be sad, but it is important for you girls to know about this as Africa is still dealing with problems today.
A long time ago in Africa, before there were any Europeans, Africa was a thriving place, with tons of resources and knowledge. Everyone was living their lives with content, until one day when everything was taken from them.
The Europeans' goal was to extract all the natural resources, take people and make them slaves in the New World, and colonize all the land.
Africans would be transported to the Americas on slave ships, where they had very little to no room and were fed little. They were treated like animals on these ships. Many would jump overboard and die to escape slavery. It took anywhere from a month to three to get across the ocean.
Slaves were taken from Africa and were sent to work for wealthy families in the United States. They were used to help extract the resources .
You will be working for me now. You will do as I say, or there will be consequences.
They were forced into a lot of labour, and if rules were not followed, they would be whipped or hurt worse. this lasted from the 1500s to the late 1800s, when slavery was abolished.
Go Ottoman Empire, Woot Woot!
One of the other major changes in Africa was the Berlin Conference (1884-1885), when a bunch of European countries and some other countries all met and split Africa into countries. Not a single representative from Africa was invited.
Belgium may be small, but I want lots of land!
While all of these countries have now gained independence, they are still dealing with the effects of being colonized, and they are still being used today for their resources, such as oil and diamonds.
