- Polonius comes to visit the King Claudius and Queen Gertrude, accompanied by two ambassadors, Voltemand and Cornelius, that returned from Norway; investigating Fortinbras intents of attacking Denmark.

- Voltemand informed that Fortinbras had been planning to attack Denmark behind the king's back. The ambassadors informed the king of the situation, and he threatened Fortinbras jailtime; to which he decided to just give up on agitating Denmark.
- Polonius came to inform the reason of Hamlet's madness: love. He read a letter written by the prince to his daughter, Ophelia, in which he proclaimed his love for her.
- To prove this, the king and queen conspire to set Hamlet up, and plan a meeting between him and Ophelia while Claudius and Polonius are in hiding and observing Hamlet's behavior.
- Hamlet comes in and Claudius and Gertrude leave. Polonius wants to conversate with Hamlet, but Hamlet outwits him with words while pretending to be insane and drives him away.
- Hamlet meets with Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, his two childhood friends. Hamlet is able to make them confess that they were really sent there by the king and queen. To lift his spirits, they notify him that his favorite actors have come to show him a play.
