  • A year later...
  • I'm Charlotte James of the National News Network, and I'm here to give you an update on a story from a year ago - Hurricane Harvey. Since the hurricane, Texas has taken many steps towards recovery.
  • 350 million cubic feet of trash and rubble were cleaned up. On September 8th, 2017, Trump put 15 billion federal dollars towards Harvey recovery. Lots of Texans have renovated and restored their homes, and moved back in. Everything seems back to normal! Except, there's another side to the story.
  • BEFORE...
  • AFTER
  • While only 11% of whites with homes destroyed during Harvey report that their homes are still unfit to live in....
  • 20% of blacks with homes ruined by Harvey say that their houses still haven't been fixed.
  • And 28% of latinos agree.
  • This shows that while many wealthier, white neighborhoods have made a full recovery from Hurricane Harvey, poor, colored neighborhoods haven't received enough aid in order to restore residences. They're living in near poverty while attempting to restore their lives all on their own. Government money has clearly been used to prioritize neighborhoods with white majorities.
  • Hopefully, over the next few years, these communities will get the help they need and deserve in order to get back to the way things were.
