  • French and Indian War
  • We want to settle on the Ohio River Valley!
  • But we were there first! We trade with the Indians!
  • Proclamation of 1763
  • Why do we have to pay taxes if we don't get any say in the government?
  • Sugar Act
  • Want to buy some sugar? It's 7 cents more now, because of taxes!
  • What?? This is outrageous!
  • The British and French fought over the rights to settle on the Ohio River Valley, and trade with the Indians there. Various tribes allied with both sides.
  • Stamp Act
  • When the war ended, France lost all of their North American land. Britain got all the land east of the Mississippi, and Spain got all the land west of it. Even though the colonies had just won a war over the Ohio River Valley, the Proclamation of 1763 said the colonists could not settle there. They were also upset because they got no representation in the parlement.
  • Quartering Act
  • Build us houses!
  • In 1764, the British parliament issued a tax on sugar and molasses. This was to pay for the war, that put britain in massive debt. The tax also helped stop smuggling of molasses and sugar, which had become an epidemic. However, the colonists were not happy, as this was the first time they were being taxed for the benefit of the crown.
  • The Stamp Act was an act that taxed the colonists for all paper documents, including wills, deeds, pamphlets, newspapers, even playing cards. The tax went toward paying back debt from the war. The colonists still had no representation in the government.
  • The Quartering Act was a law that brought large (unwanted) military troops to the colonies. The colonists had to pay extra taxes to pay for them, and provide them housing.
