- Fearing for their lives, King Louis XVI and his family attempted to escape to Austria, as Marie Antoinetted had relatives there. They hoped they would be safe there, but were caught before they could escape.
- The National Convention was then created in 1792. It abandoned the monarchy, and was organized as a republic.

- In 1792, King Louis XVI was tried by the National Convention, and was found guilty of having conspired against the liberty of the nation. In 1793, he was beheaded.
- A political party named Jacobins, lead by a man named Robespierre, decided to try and get rid of any type of resistance against the new nation. Neighborhood watches were established to find and execute any suspected traitors. This time period was named "The Reign of Terror" and lasted from 1793 to 1794.
- What Robespierre was doing wasn't right. He has gotten approximately 17 000 individuals executed during The Reign of Terror. So he is eventually captured, and was then tried and executed.
- A group of five men formed "The Directory". They were appointed to create peace and stability, which is something many of the people wanted after all the violence from The Reign of Terror.
