- the Confederacy winning this first battle and being a major battle in the civil war
- The battle started began when about 35,000 marched from the capitol to strike the confederates that had 20,000 and to claim a river
- there was a desire for the north to push towards the south to Richmond and take out the confederacy leading this to a major battle
