  • The Proclamation of 1763 was a boundary line going along the Appalachian Mountains. Created by the British, this lineprohibited Anglo-American colonists from settling on lands acquired from the French following the French and Indian War. This led to anger from the colonists. This law is the first of many disagreements between colonists and the British.

  • The Sugar Act was enforced by the British in 1764. Its purpose was to increase British revenue, allowing them to pay off their post French war debt. They did this by increasing the amount of taxes colonists had to pay. The Sugar Act also preventedthe smuggling of Molasses into the colonies. Merchants had to pay much more for their stock, which obviously angered them.
  • Boston Massacre
  • In March 1765, the British passed the Stamp Act to help pay for British troops stationed in the colonies during the war. The act required the colonists to pay a tax, represented by a stamp, on various forms of papers, documents, and playing cards. Colonists had to purchase special stamped paper for every legal document, license, newspaper, pamphlet etc. It also led to the creation of the Sons of Liberty.
  • Boston Tea Party
  • The Townshend Acts were enforced in 1767/1768. In another attempt to make money, Britain raised tax on imported goods. This includes indirect taxes on imported materials such as glass, lead, paint, paper, and tea. The colonies responded with their political slogan, No Taxation Without Representation. The phrase meant that the colonists wouldn't be taxed by a government that doesn't give them a say in what happens.
  • The Boston Massacre took place on March 5th 1770. The Boston Massacre was the shooting and killing of multiple colonist civilians. It started as a colonist riot against the British, but got out of hand once colonists began throwing snowballs at nine armed British soldiers. The soldiers, feeling threatened by the hundreds of colonists threatening and attempting to harm them, opened fire. They shot and killed about 5 people. But the occurrence would be labeled as a massacre to increase it's impact.
  • The Boston Tea Party took place on December 18th 1773.American colonists were frustrated and enraged at Britain following the enforcement of “taxation without representation. The colonists responded by dumping 342 chests of tea, which were imported by the British East India Company into the harbor. The event was the first major act of defiance to British rule. This act of defiance would lead to many more in later years.
