Storyboard Text

  • This is a story about Olemaun (Margaret) Pokiak, a young Inuit girl who was born in Island Banks Canada, she was only 8 years old when her life changed for the worst. She was taken away from her family and home after going to school, not knowing that it would be the worst 2 years of her life thinking that she would get to learn how to read and enjoy school.
  • In February 1944 After packing up her stuff, the recruiters who came to send her to school boarded the train with her and they headed to Immaculate Conception Residential School. The train travelled from the Northwest Territories to Aklavik, which meant she would be very far from home. When she arrived a black-coated nun cut Olemaun's hair. She felt as though she was being stripped from her culture as hair was a big part of their beliefs, and had a huge meaning.
  • As the class went on Olemaun saw girls raise their hands so she did too and the teacher did not hesitate to pick her. She mocked her in front of the class and eventually, the students did the same leaving Margaret in the corner staring at the wall. So Margaret got determined and started studying in her free time. But one evening she hurried to eat her supper so she could read but her teacher stopped her saying where are you going ? There are pots to be scrubbed. Margaret held her ground so the made smiled and told her to get cabbage from the basement, so Margaret hurried to do so.
  • When Oleamun was done forcefully getting her hair cut she was then stripped of her name and given an English one called Margaret. And just when she thought she was at her worst she was made to do many chores throughout the morning, and the made who cut her hair gave her extra chores. After getting to class thinking she was going to read, behind the teacher's desk sat the nun who had cut Margaret's hair. She didn't like that at all but she was ready to learn.
  • While entering the basement she remembered the stories that people were saying about kids going missing and quickly went to a cabbage, grabbed it, and ran up the stairs. But the Nun slammed the door behind her leaving Margaret in the deep dark basement alone. In the basement, she spelt things from her home thinking of her father who congratulated her for learning them. As soon as the nun opened the door she ran past her and headed for the sink. When she headed back to the crowded area everyone had new black stockings but the nun gave her red ones making sure I became a laughing stock.
  • After all she went through the next day she was given a book that the older girls read and was told read, so she stood up and read with confidence and then got seated. The nun could no longer stop her. She reminded herself that her goal has been achieved and was now able to read even after going through all those hardships, and she didn't cry because she persevered through it all.
