  • A little more than kin, a little less than kind.

  • Thou know’st ’tis common; all that lives must die...
  • True Grief
  • “Seems,” madam? Nay, it is. I know not “seems.”’Tis not alone my inky cloak, good mother
  • Right from the start, it is clear Hamlet is unhappy with the people around him in his family. This is his first line in the entire play, and it's specifically directed towards the King - someone who plays a huge role in Hamlet's life. Hamlet, in short, tells the audience Claudius is a jerk. (line 65)
  • Confession of Depression
  • Hamlet is grieving the death of his father and trying to live with the new developments with his uncle as his stepfather, yet many are manipulating Hamlet and invalidating his conflicted emotions. (line 72)
  • Hamlet's Self Image
  • Yet I,A dull and muddy-mettled rascal, peakLike John-a-dreams, unpregnant of my cause...
  • Hamlet is very upfront with is emotions, and he is loyal to his stance on his mother's betrayal. He is the only one grieving, and clearly says that his sorrow runs deep, while theirs is shallow and fake.  (line 76)
  • To Be or Not To Be?
  • Hamlet pours his feelings into a monologue to Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, showing the intensity of his depression and inner distress. Specifically, he illustrates his current worldview and gloom. (lines 298 - 316)
  • I have of late,but wherefore I know not, lost all my mirth...
  • Hamlet shares his thoughts with the audience in an incredibly self-deprecating soliloquy. He is unsatisfied with his indecisive personality, and isn't confident in his worth. He crumbles more into his depressed mental state, and introduces more conflict within himself. (lines 558 - 614)

  • In this speech, Hamlet contemplates suicide. He feels trapped enough by his situation that he considers the option, but he decides against it due to his fear of the unknown. (lines 57 - 91)
