A group of girls including Abigail and Betty were caught dancing in the forest in Salem by Reverend Harris, which is against their Puritan belief. Knowing they would get in trouble some of the girls acted sick and Abigail accused them of being possessed by the devil.
The girls accused many people of being witched to avoid punishment and now innocent citizens of Salem are being killed. Back then everyone was guilty until proven innocent.
Abigail told John that her and the girls were lying and she knew he wouldn't say anything because she had their affair over his head.
The court had a warrant for Elizabeth Proctor's arrest and John ripped it up. Abigail accused her of cutting her stomach when she really did it herself. Elizabeth was arrested and John made Mary Warren go to the court with him and tell them the truth.
John admitted his act of adultery to the court and was arrested. Abigail fled to Boston and in order for Danforth to keep his rep, he forces John to confess to being witched.
John refuses to sign his name on his confession to kind of keep his dignity and is hung.
