2. Trouble With Trade
There was intercolonial trade which was trade among the colonies
People who lived near the border of the U.S and Canada lived in fear because of the Fenian Raids
There was a lack of efficient transportation to move goods from one colony to another
Tariffs are taxes imposed by the government on an imported good at the border.
The colonies had duties/tariffs to keep goods out from other colonies to protect them.
Canada had a treaty known as the Reciprocity Treaty which meant free trade between Canada and the U.S.
They used more external trade.
Britain repeated the Corn Laws and changed to more of a free trade system.
This meant that Canada lost its price advantage over American producers
Corn Laws are laws that governed the import and export of grains
- They felt that Canada was gaining more from the treaty than them
In 1865, the U.S wanted to back out of the Reciprocity Trade for 3 reasons:
-They wanted to punish Britain for supporting the South in the Civil War
-They disliked that Canada still had tariffs on some manufactured goods
