- The Civil War happened because of slavery though the slaves gained freedom, the Civil War hadn't promised equality for the former slaves so many faced discrimination because they had been slaves. Abraham Lincoln had been assassinated The Civil War had strengthened American governments and America itself as an effect of the War that took place from 1861-1865.
