  • 1189 Richard becomes King of England. He was crowned at Westminster Abbey in London. He pardoned men who had fought against his father- gaining their support.

  • 1189 Richard had agreed to go on a crusade in the Holy Land as Muslim forces led by Saladin had captured Jerusalem. To pay for it he raised taxes and sold off jobs and land.

  • June 1190 Richard set of on crusade, invading Cyprus on his way. He arrived in 1191 and in July he joined forces with Philip II’s French army and captured Acre. However the two leaders fell out but Richard defeated Saladin at the Battle of Arsuf.
  • 1199
  • The main aim of the crusade was to capture Jerusalem. Richard tried to do this twice but failed. He agreed a truce with Saladin and Jerusalem remaining under Saladin’s control but Christians could visit.
  • Richard left in 1192, traveling through Europe in disguise to avoid enemies. He was recognised and captured in Vienna and imprisoned by the Duke of Austria until a huge ransom was paid in 1194
  • During his time away, his lands in France were captured by Philip II after plotting with Richard's brother John. Most of England stayed loyal to Richard and John had to beg his brothers forgiveness. By 1198 Richard had won back his lands and built Chateau Gaillard. 1198 Richard was wounded and named John his heir in 1199 and died.
