Storyboard Text

  • In 1861 the first war of the Civil War started. Confederate troops formed a ring around the harbor with heavy guns and demanded that federal troops evacuate the fort. The Battle of Fort Sumter was the first shots fired between the Union & Confederate Armies, marking that the Civil War had begun.

  • Fought near Maryland. First war fought on northern soil. The fighting was so intense that it intended up being the bloodiest one-day battle in all of history with 23,000 casualties. I think the importance is how many people died.
  • Antietam
  • Gettysburg war was considered a turning point in the civil war. General Lee invaded the north and was met by the Union army at Gettysburg. After 3 days of a bloody fight, Lee's army retreated in defeat. 58,000 casualties. This was the turning point because it was the last time that the south invaded the south.
  • Gettysburg
  • The North captured the Confederate stronghold of Vicksburg, Mississippi. The Siege of Vicksburg gave the Union control of the Mississippi River. This divided the south and cut off their ability to transport cotton to foreign markets. This cause a crash in the south's economy.
