THE LEWIS AND CLARK EXPEDITION BEGAN IN MAY 1804.
The President Thomas Jefferson tasked Meriwether Lewis with exploring lands west of the Mississippi River that comprised the Louisiana Purchase. Lewis chose William Clark as his co-leader for the mission.
They found many other animals but the one they really caught there eye was the buffalo
There over 170 tribes in the land they knew more about is then they did. Most farmers and other tribes traded peacefully but the Teton Sioux were the most powerful tribe when traders it there land they wanted to start war but the chief waved there men off.
There was a fork in the river they didn't know which was the Missouri and found the right path but were low on horses and food.
Went down the Missouri river and hoped for the ocean but instead found high mountains and trees.
the approximately 8,000-mile journey was deemed a huge success and provided new geographic, ecological and social information about previously uncharted areas of North America.
