Excommunications: In 1054, tensions between the Roman Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church led to a dramatic split. Cardinal Humbert, representing the Pope, kicked out Patriarch Michael I Cerularius of the Eastern Church. In response, Michael I Cerularius expelled Humbert and his group. This back-and-forth of excommunications marked the official separation of the two branches.
