- The Nazis break into Josef's house, and they make Josef's father go to a concentration camp. Josef tries to save his father, but the Nazis grab him and tell him that he would go to a concentration camp someday.
- A few days later, the Nazis tell Josef's family that they have to leave Germany in fourteen days or they will go to concentration camps. They said that people would be reunited with family members. After fourteen days, Josef's family leaves their home and goes to the train to go to their ship. Josef tries to buy Ruthie, his younger sister, a piece of candy. He gets caught by a Nazi youth. Thankfully, the Nazi youth lets Josef go, and they safely arrive at their ship.
- They meet Josef's father by the dock, but his head is shaved, and he acts paranoid. He runs up the dock toward the ship, saying that they have to go quickly because the Nazis are coming. Josef's mom apologizes to the man in the ticket booth and gives him everybody's tickets. They haven't tithed yet on the boat, and they are getting settled in. Josef thinks it is like a paradise because people are so nice there.
- Josef had just turned 13, so he had his bar mitzvah in the ship's main room. He was sad when his father refused to come to his bar mitzvah because the Nazis were out to get him. He and his mother and sister celebrated anyway. When they arrive in Cuba, they are not allowed inside. So policemen stay on guard on the outside of the ship so no one tries to escape the ship.
- A doctor comes to inspect everyone on board to make sure they are safe to go in. Josef's father is terrified, but Josef slaps him in the face and tells him to be calm because he is a nazi, and that if he wasn't calm, he would go back to a concentration camp, so Josef's dad was calm and they successfully made it thru the inspection.
- Josef's father was so scared and terrified that the Nazis were out to get him that he tried to commit suicide.
