Storyboard Text

  • BEECHER PREP
  • August is a kid with a deformity, and he gets bullied a lot. He is always the center of attention in a bad way. He knows that he isn't ordinary and he says, "But, I know ordinary kids don't make other kids run away screaming on the playground" (Palacio 3). He wants to be ordinary, but he knows he isn't by the way that children treat him.
  • What?!?!?!? I don't want to go to a real school.
  • Auggie we were thinking about sending you to a real school this year.
  • August has facial features that are very different from everyone else. The text states, "His eyes are about an inch below where they should be on his face, almost halfway down his cheeks. They slant downward at an extreme angle, almost like diagonal slits that someone cut into his face... He doesn't have any eyebrows or eyelashes"(Palacio 88). August's face looks a lot different, and it shocks some kids.
  • August and I aren't friends!
  • August is overall very courageous. In the beginning of the book he really didn't want to go to school, but by the end he loved school. The text states that "Up until a few days before we still weren't sure I would be going to school at all"(Palacio 55). August built up courage to go even though in his mindset he wasn't planning on going to school until a few days prior to the start.
  • In the beginning of the book August is very stubborn, and he isn't open to trying new things. The text supports this with, "I don't want to go!"(Palacio 3). August is turning down going to an actual school, but is later convinced to go.
  • In the middle of the book August is also very unconfident from what people say about him. The text explains, "And I really think that if I looked like him I would kill myself"(Palacio 77). August becomes very sad because of this, and it makes him not like school or Jack.
  • In the end of the book august becomes very confident. The text states, "I don't mean to brag here but it kind of felt like everyone wanted to get close to me"(Palacio 308). At the end of the book everyone truly knows August, and people have started to become friends with him.
