  • Causes of the War
  • The War of 1812
  • Trouble with Native Americans
  • Land Battles
  • The War of 1812 was mainly caused by British impressment of American sailors and trade restrictions placed by the British. American sailors were captured to serve in the British navy and a treaty failed to address this issue. Americans were very angry at this. Trade restrictions were also made on American ships. They could only trade with Great Britain, not France. This resulted in less profit for American merchants.
  • Sea Battles
  • Before the War of 1812 the United States was expanding to the west in the newly purchased Louisiana Territory. Native Americans were being pushed out of land they had owned long before European countries claimed it. Some Native Americans such as Tecumseh and The Prophet began fighting back. A battle occurred and the Native Americans were defeated. Americans discovered that Native Americans were using weapons recently manufactured by the British. This meant that Great Britain was encouraging Native Americans to attack Americans. Unsurprisingly many Americans were outraged by this.
  • The Battle of New Orleans
  • During the War of 1812 there were a few battles on land. Some of the battles happened when Americans tried to take over British controlled Canada. They expected to gain Canada easily, but they were stopped every time. Another battle was the British attack of Washington D. C. The president had to flee. The last land battle of the war was the Battle of New Orleans. Andrew Jackson managed to defeat British troops with minimal casualties.
  • Results of the War
  • There were also some sea battles in the War of 1812. One of these sea battles resulted in the American capture of six British ships. The ships allowed Americans to try once again to push into Canada. Initially Americans managed to defeat the British. However, the British pushed the Americans out of the border, so this victory did not have much effect on the war.
  • The Battle of New Orleans was the last battle of the War of 1812. A total of 7,500 British troops attacked a force of 7,000 Americans led by Andrew Jackson. The Americans defeated the British with low casualties. This battle was not necessary though, peace was signed before the battle.
  • The war resulted in a decrease in Native American resistance to American expansion. The war also further decreased public support for the Federalist party. However, the war did not settle the issue of impressment or the trade restrictions created by Great Britain. These issues disappeared only because Great Britain stopped fighting with France.
