- Salerio: are you sure you're not worried over your wealth you've invested in the ships?
- Solanio: if I were you, I would be depressed as well, worrying about all my wealth.
- Antonio: i don't know why i'm sad. I also don't know why i'm feeling this way. I can't sort things out.
- Antonio: no, i'm not disappointed or sad about my merchandise because i have invested my wealth in many different places.
- Salerio: HHEHEHEH
- Solanio: if it's not merchandise...then you must be in love hehehe and if not then you might just not want to stay happy.
- Salerio and Solanio: we would love to stay but since your friends are here we shall leave.
- Salerio and Solanio: sure, we can fix up a time.
- Bassanio: we haven't talked to each other for a while now huh? let's meet up sometime.
- Antonio: i'm sure you have your own business to attend. We'll meet again.
- A quayside in Venice, Italy, in the sixteenth century. Antonio, a rich merchant suffering from depression, is talking to two friends, Salerio and Salanio.
- Lorenzo: we'll leave you now Bassanio. don't forget we are meeting for dinner.
- Antonio: world is a stage, where every man has a part to play. Hence, mine happens to be a sad one :C
- Salerio says that Antonio might be worried about his merchandise but Antonio refuses and says that it's not because of his merchandise that he is feeling that way. Then Solanio teases Antonio and says that he must be in love.
- Lorenzo: we'll leave you till dinner time then. sir Antonio, if you're the sad person then i must be the dumb one as Gratiano never lets me get a word in.
- Bassanio, a young gentleman, and his friends Lorenzo and Gratiano come to see Antonio. So, Salerio and Solanio go their own way and gives them their space.
- Antonio: Bassanio, you know that i don't have cash with me at the moment. go to Venice and see what my credit is good for there. borrow the money on the strength of my credit.
- Lorenzo tells that Gratiano and he was going to leave Bassanio and Antonio alone but reminds Bassanio not to be late for dinner. But before leaving Gratiano tells Antonio about how he seemed off these days. In reply, Antonio tells Gratanio that he had a sad part to play as per his character referring to how the world is a stage and every man has a part to play in it.
- Gratiano: you don't look well, Signior Antonio. you stress too much nowadays.
- Bassanio: won't let you down.
- They continue talking.......a little later Lorenzo and Gratiano leave.
- Gratiano: i want to be the clown then. but for now, let's bid a farewell. Lorenzo, let's go.
- Bassanio asks for another loan to Antonio but since Antonio didn't have any cash with him at the moment he tells Bassanio to go to Venice and see what good his credit is there.
- Bassanio: Antonio, i want to take a second loan from you. i know i wasted the first loan but this time i wont spend it recklessly. i need the loan to go visit Portia.
