  • The tale begins in a small town in Tamil Nadu, Shankar came from an economically backward family. They were outcasted and isolated because they were from the Dalit Pallar Community.
  • Shankar grew up watching his father being ill-treated by the upper caste of society. He wasn’t allowed to enter temples or drink from the public wells. The Pallars were in dispute with the upper castes, Thevars.
  • Shankar was isolated from his classmates as Dalits were not allowed to sit next other caste children. They weren’t allowed to use the same utensils; the restrictions and indignities were imposed which was heart-breaking for him.
  • Shankar felt ostracized, ridiculed, harassed and even thought of self-harm because of the ill-treatment his family and him had faced. During these dark hours, a fighter was gearing up to be born.
  • He demanded for equality from a young age. His tolerance wore off as he grew up to be an advocate for his community. He educated the Pallars on how important it is to right for their rights and seek equality.
  • He worked to improve education, rights, and representation of his Dalit community. He filed petitions and went around the country spreading awareness on the oppression of minorities. His advocacy brought a change in his community. A small change as entering the temple can bring a revolution!
