  • "How rude they are, these so-called gentry.” (Pg. 48)
  • In this scene of Lyddie, Lyddie is in a stagecoach, on her way to Lowell, Massachusetts. She is going to work in the mills there. Lyddie is inside the stagecoach with two other passengers. A man and a woman who appear to be married. Both the man and the woman are very fancy looking. It is a very small space for passengers and Lyddie feels awkward.
  • Soon after, more people joined aboard the stagecoach. Six people were now on the stagecoach travelling to Lowell. Lyddie began to feel more uncomfortable by the moment. Lyddie also began to notice that the other passengers were looking at her strangely. More specifically, her clothes.
  • I know that a Person Vs. Society conflict is being demonstrated in this scene. This is because Lyddie (A person) feels awkward and upset when other people on the stagecoach (Society) start to stare at her clothes in disapproval. The people in the stagecoach are a part of society and they are judging Lyddie based on the way she is dressed. Society is judging a person. Lyddie does not like this and is mortified. She does not like these people and thinks they are rude. But overall, the conflict that is being shown here is a Person Vs. Society type of conflict, because on her way to Lowell in a stagecoach, some other passengers (Society) begin to stare at Lyddie’s (A person) clothes in disapproval and dislike. This causes Lyddie to feel uncomfortable and angry.
