- Introduction
- Women in Beartown (also in our society) are not given the same opportunities as men because it is "better" for the economy. If everyone was treated equally, then the economy would benefit twice as much from the added workforce and new ideas. It is unfair that women should be excluded so the economy of that community can thrive. The sacrifices that should be happening is people working harder TOGETHER to get their economy back up.
- Narration
- When women are not given the same opportunities, men tend to not give women equal respect. This is dangerous because it can lead to women being taken advantage of.
- "The idea that women are property has arguably extended into women's professional worlds, with sexual harassment prevalent across industries and most positions of power occupied by men" (Women's Rights).
- "So few women existed in his hockey world that when he saw one he didn't recognize, he took it for granted that she must be a waitress" (Backman, 29).

- There is no girl's hockey team in Beartown because the town does not want to invest in one when there is multiple boy's hockey team. Girls in Beartown are expected to "...be interested in hockey players, not hockey" (Backman, 223).
- Giving women equal opportunities would better the economy of a community for all genders.

- "In 2017 the Center for American Progress noted that although women comprised 44 percent of all employees working for companies listed on the Standard & Poor’s 500 stock market index, they occupied only 25 percent of executive and senior-level management roles, 20 percent of board seats, and 6 percent of CEO positions at those companies" (Working Women).
- "Some fields and industries have gained a reputation for excluding women" (Working Women). This can result in danger for women in that position.
- Concession/Refutation
- "In the United States, women had very low levels of workforce participation in the formal economy until the twentieth century" (Working Women).
- Women and girls being treated unfairly is the daily life in Beartown. Females are not given the same experience to play hockey, and the hockey players are just as bad as the adults in the town. Kevin goes as far as raping Maya because that is the way males were taught to treat females. If the girls had gotten the same chance to have their own hockey team, the two genders would be able to see each other more equally. Instead, the community decided to choose economy over safety.
- Conclusion
- If each community is able to come together with both males and females working side by side, then we can accomplish great things as a whole. If you are a male, show some true respect towards women (and not just because you think that particular lady is hot). If you are a female reading this, we can all be independent and still stand strong united.
- Females are not given the same chance for success in leadership roles as males are given. Most women work for other companies instead of having their own higher positions in the workforce.
- While feminism has been on the rise when compared with the past, there is still other issues that we must address today regarding women. Sexual assault and other unfair treatment is still an issue for women that must be addressed and fixed.
- "According to a 2017 report published in the Economist, about half of all employed women in the United States will face sexual harassment in the workplace" (Feminism).
- Women's rights is a serious issue that impacts everybody both economically and socially. As shown in Beartown, women need the same opportunities as men for both safety and growth. When we are able to accept, goodness will intercept.
