- The persons who funded for Mary's trip to Italy are now demanding payment and threatening Mary's mother in Nigeria. "They warned they will do something extremely awful to her if I don't send money," she says, her voice trembling.
- Mary was 17 years old. She thought she had no future in her hometown of Benin City, Nigeria, so she went looking for work elsewhere. She was introduced to Ben, a man who promised to pay for her flight to Italy and use his connections to find her a job in a restaurant.
- When can I get this job.
- Soon when you come to Italy
- She is in agony as she waits for her documents to be processed. "I'm in such a bad mood. I'm under a lot of stress. I'm at a loss for what to do... All I want is to be free. Even if it's only for a day, I'd like it to be over." Mary's ambition of a better life persists despite the enormous hardship she has endured as a victim of human trafficking.

- Mary was summoned to Ben's house shortly after meeting him and forced to pledge that she would not attempt to flee. In March 2016, she and a group of boys and girls boarded a plane bound for Libya, a halt on their way to Europe.
- She desperately wanted to leave, but she had no way of getting in touch with anyone back home. She explains, "I had to stay there for months until they called me to board the boat." Mary was told she would be living in a camp and working as a prostitute when she was ultimately put on a boat to Italy—unjust terms she had never agreed to and couldn't escape.
- "One day, I will have my documents, an education, and a job," she says optimistically. She aspires to be a lawyer and help those who have been victims of human trafficking. "I want to bring justice to the females who are forced to work with their bodies." That day came and the men exploited Mary got arrest and was sentence life in jail.
