  • The French and Indian war was between the American colonies and New France. The war lasted from 1754 to 1763. British troops helped the colonist in the war and were also stationed in the colonies for protection after the war. The troops wernt free so the British decided to tax the American colonies to help pay for the troops,
  • Unity among colonies
  • Before 1764 the British government had left the American colonist to govern themselves. In 1764 they put in new laws and taxes. The colonist did not like the new taxes and said they would not pay British taxes. They believed in "no taxation without Representation". People in Boston started protesting these new laws. In 1773 the British gave a new tax law on tea. In response, Boston bored ships in Boston Harbor and dumped the tea abord into the water.
  • The War Starts
  • In response to the Boston Tea Party, Brittian issued new laws that the colonist called the Intolerable Acts. One of the laws was that the Boston Port Act which would shut down the port of Boston for trade. This punished everyone who lived in Boston and patriots and loyalists. This upsetted people in Boston and people in other colonies who were scared the the British would do the same to them.
  • The British laws punishing the colonies didn't really control the colonies as the British had planned. It did the opposite. The laws caused the colonies to become united agist the British. Colonies sent supplies to Boston during the blockade.
  • Lets work together against Britain!
  • In 1774 all colonies except 1 sent people as a response to the Intolerable Acts. They sent a petition to King George III to repeal the Intolerable Acts but never got a response. In 1775 British soldiers in Massachusetts were ordered to disarm and arrest American rebels and their leaders. The revolutionary war began on April 19, 1775, when at the Battles of Lexington and Concord fighting broke out.
