After the French and Indian War, people living in the colonies began moving west. Conflicts with Native Americans increased and the colonists asked the British king to protect them with troops. Instead, the king issued an official statement closing the western land to settlement. The colonists were angry and felt betrayed by the British government.

MINUTEMEN
the Boston Massacre occurred one night in March 1770. A disagreement between Boston colonists and British troops got out of hand and became very violent. The troops fired their guns at the colonists that were armed with clubs. In total, five colonists were killed. Many Patriots then publicized the event and name it "The Boston Massacre".
Common Sense (By Thomas Paine) 1776
Due to the Boston Massacre , Parliament passed many laws in order to punish the colonists from Massachusetts. These laws included the Boston Port Act. Many colonists got very upset by there acts and called them the "Intolerable Acts" of 1774. The colonists were very angry at this point!
Declaration of Independence, 1776
One night in April, 1775, 700 British soldiers went to find hidden weapons. Unknown to them, though, several minutemen were waiting to attack in Lexington already. A shot was soon fired, and battle broke out. During this short battle, eight minutemen died, and one British soldier was injured. More minutemen soon arrived, and by the end, a total of 273 British soldiers had died.

In 1776, a man named Thomas Paine created a 50-page pamphlet called Common Sense, and suggested the idea of this separation from British to the colonies. This quickly became a famous book and a "Best Seller" across the colonies.

The Declaration of Independence was written by Thomas Jefferson of Virginia in order to convince the Continental Congress that they should separate Britain. The Congress took a vote on July 4, 1776, they accepted the Declaration of Independence.
