The war was a setback on the suffrage movement because there had to be a pause due to the war. In 1916 Wilson endorsed votes for women although this happened there was still a stop in the movement

All throughout the north and the south, there were racial violence waves. Many Americans were killed during 1917 in Illinois, employers had to recruit African Americans to weaken unions. in Chicago, there was a line separating blacks and whites.

The US government made laws to restrict freedom of speech, they were called the espionage acts of 1917. It prohibited not only spying and interfering with the draft but it also prohibited false statements that interfere with military success. This was the first time since 1798.
