Storyboard Text
The tribes cut down the trees using hand tools.
After the trees are dried they are burnt. This removes the weeds and roots to provide natural fertilisers.
The area is now has been planted, with things like manico, rice and pumpkins. This gives the tribes cash crops.
As soon as the trees have been cleared the soil starts to loose its fertility as the heavy rain washes away the nutrients out of the soil.
The soil is now poor, the crops stop growing.
Tribes now need to move to a new area. They need to go back to step one.
After 20-25 years the land can be farmed again.
