  • Salem Witch Trials
  • Our Failure, Our Duty
  • In the "Our Failure, Our Duty" section of David McCullough's essay, he describes how many people "tell stories" about history that were never necessarily true. He goes into explaining how many people should start learning more about history and how "telling stories" needs to stop.
  • The Salem Witch Trials is a perfect example of this. Women and men in the town of Salem were being accused of witchcraft because these little girls kept on accusing people and making up stories about them being witches because they were different than the rich folk.
  • They are involved in witchcraft!
  • The made up stories about different people in the town and would not stop and later would result in innocent lives being taken. This all started from telling stories throughout the town, which people were actually believing.
  • I'm being framed!
  • Sadly, many people who were accused of witchcraft were hanged because they thought they were dealing with the "dark arts" and this was not allowed. Over 200 people were accused of witchcraft but only 20 people were executed because of the accusations.
  • Later the town of Salem realized that it was wrong of them to execute these poor people when they had no proof if they were actually dealing with witchcraft. We now learn about the Salem Witch Trials so we don't spread any false stories about anyone or what happened in the past so we can grow from our mistakes and make sure nothing like that ever happens again.
