  • Rachel Carson began her career as a Biologist at John Hopkins University but before getting her Doctorate she had to sadly leave to take care of her family. BUT THIS DID NOT STOP HER!
  • While taking care of her family she started working at the Bureau of Fisheries and she became popular by her ability to draw in readers. In 1936 she was the second woman to be hired by the Bureau full time.
  • In 1941, Carson published the first of three best selling books about the ocean. She combined science with cool rare details about "underwater worlds". She later went to wright Silent Spring which would change what the world thought forever.
  • Silent Spring talked about human interactions with the environment. One point she focused on was DDT harmful chemicals /pesticides.
  • DDT is very bad for us and could cause catastrophic harm if not taken care of right away. Carson later went on to list many harmful effects the chemical has on the environment.
  • Sadly DDT and other pesticide restrictions were not enacted until two years after Carson died of Cancer, but there were still many things that were done. For example, in 1969, Congress passed the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). President Richard Nixon also created the Environmental Protection Agency and partially banned the use of DDT. Rachel Carson's writing still captivates and tells an important narrative for readers interested in science for years to come.
