Religion was very important for daily life in the colonies. Preachers held meetings to bring back religious beliefs and planted the idea of the American Revolution. The Great Awakening was popular in the 1730s. The Great Awakening was the revival of religious feeling and belief in American Colonies.

The British Government left the colonies alone for many years, leaving them to lead themselves.
First Continental Congress
After the French and Indian War, Great Britain needed a way to gain their money back, so they started to tax the colonists. In 1767, the Townshend Act was created, placing a tax on all imports. The colonists fought against it, and it was repealed. But Great Britain kept the tax on tea. Thus, creating the Tea Act, saying colonists could only purchase tea from Britain.
Declaration of Independence
Colonists were upset by the Tea Act, so they decided to block the tea from. being taken off British ships. The Sons of Liberty boarded boats dressed up as Indians and dumped the tea in the Boston harbor.
The First Continental Congress met in Philadelphia in 1774. They decided to continue boycotting British goods, and offered an Olive Branch petition to King George to offer peace. They raised militias and began to think of themselves as American, which was a new concept.
Thomas Jefferson uses John Locke's ideas to write the first draft of the Declaration of Independence in July 1776 in Philadelphia. It was written in the format of an essay. His thesis was Locke's ideas that if government is not protecting rights, the government can be replaced. His evidence was the abuses and tyranny of King and Parliament. His conclusion was the American colonies are now free and independent states.
