- Marie Antoinette and her husband, King Louis XIV were always known for extravagant spending. They were also known to not really care about ruling the country effectively, and would often neglect the lower estates, especially the lowest, the 3rd estate.
- I sure love wastefully speding the country's money on shopping sprees!
- Over in the Palace of Versailes, the King is worried about the war debts.
- We love overspending our country's money!
- Couldn't agree more!
- How are we going to buy bread with the rising inflation and ongoing famine? It doesn't help that the king and queen continue to overspend...
- Meanwhile....
- And of course, the 3rd estate was upset.
- We barely have money to buy bread with the inflation going on, and the current famine just makes it worse. What should we do?
- SHOP
- During this reckless period of spennding, the 1st and 2nd estates, which comprised of the clergy and nobles respectively, were doing fine. The estate that really suffered was the lowest 3rd estate, which comprised of workers and peasants.
- While this is happening, Enlightenment ideas spread through France.
- Maybe the king shouldn't have that much power....
- We have to pay our debts! How do we do this?
- I know! We should summon the Estates General! Surely the 3rd estate won't be upset!
- Us 3rd estate people are underrepresented and neglected by the king, and now he wants us to help him with war debts as the inflation gets worse? Absolutely not! We will seperate from the Estates General and make our own National Assembly.
- In addition to the National Assembly, the 3rd estate also creates a document similar to the US Constitution, known as the Decleration of Rights of Man and the Citizen (DORM). Along with this, when the 3rd estate arrives at the Bastille, they promise not to leave the tennis court until the king opened the meeting room, now known as the Tennis Court Oath.
- We have just created the DORM, and we will not leave this court until the king opens the meeting room!
